In North Cumbria and the North East, organisations have always sought to work collaboratively where this benefits patients and supports local services.
The three STPs have been working together since their inception, building on our track record of partnership working. However, while discussions are taking place on the benefits of potentially increasing and formalising some areas of integrated working, no decisions have been taken at this stage and local discussions are continuing.
NHS local leaders are looking at the best way to coordinate the necessary change and improvement, while ensuring plans are implemented with the local partnerships needed in different communities. This includes continuing to work closely with each of the local councils, to deliver on existing priorities.
It’s clear that across the three STPs, covering North Cumbria and the North East, there are a number of common priorities that could benefit from implementation at scale and pace to maximise knowledge, staff skills and resources.
However, STPs also comprise local plans which have been developed by health and care organisations for their own communities. The Better Health Programme, for example, is continuing to work up local options to deliver better health through supporting self-care, prevention and care provided closer to home from within the wider partnership of the STP. The Path to Excellence programme in South Tyneside and Sunderland are consulting on changes to improve quality, safety and future sustainably of vulnerable services including stroke, maternity, gynaecology and paediatrics.
Local or regional proposals are only developed where they will:
- improve patient care and experience
- increase the quality, safety of services
- ensure the best possible health outcomes.
The Better Health Programme has not yet developed options for how hospital services might be delivered in the future and any proposed change would involve a comprehensive formal public consultation.
The three NHS Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) that cover the North East and North Cumbria are:
- Durham, Darlington, Tees, Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby
- Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and North Durham
- West, North and East Cumbria
