Each locality, of which there are three, Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield, also have a Patient Reference Group (PRG). Representatives from each Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG) attend a locality based Patient Reference Group meeting to represent the views of their GP Practice and its surrounding community. There is also an opportunity for the locality PRGs to meet ‘in common’ on a quarterly basis to share views across the whole of the DDES area. The locality based groups meeting during each month that falls in between the ‘in common’ meetings.
In this way Patient Reference Groups provide an opportunity for patient representatives to influence the design and delivery of health care services across Dales, Easington and Sedgefield Clinical Commissioning Group (DDES CCG) as a whole. They provide an interface to enable patients, carers and members of the public to contribute to the identification of local healthcare priorities and the commissioning of local health services.
PRGs also provide an accountability mechanism, linking DDES CCG practices and their local populations.
Patient Reference Groups also play an important role in the governance of the CCG. The three PRG Chairs meet on a quarterly basis with the CCGs Lay Member for Patient and Public Engagement and the CCGs Engagement Directorate. The chairs also sit on the CCG Governing Body as non-voting members.
