Prescribing readily available medication such as paracetamol costs the NHS millions every year adding unnecessary strain to GPs and the NHS. Processing these can cost 20 times the price of buying identical medication at your local supermarket or pharmacy. Can you buy what you need?
The CCGs in the North East and North Cumbria have agreed to work on a range of large scale initiatives to help tackle prescribing issues which are applicable to all areas. One of these initiatives is the promotion of self-care for common conditions such as acute pain in adults, hay fever in adults and travel medication.
Look out for these posters and leaflets appearing in practices, pharmacies, walk-in centres and A&E departments promoting the initiative to patients.
